Carbon Fibre Tube Layup: Beyond the Surface Weave

The same diameter and wall thickness can hide different reinforcement directions. Start with the loads and the connections.

Discuss your requirements ↗

Three directions to discuss.

0°: along the axis

Axial reinforcement contributes to response along the tube, including bending and axial loading. Its role must be considered with the rest of the laminate.

90°: around the tube

Circumferential reinforcement is relevant to hoop loads. Clamped areas also need an appropriate laminate and contact arrangement.

±45°: off-axis

Off-axis reinforcement is relevant to shear and torsion. Its proportion and position depend on the required behaviour.

Construction and appearance are separate.

Roll-wrapped construction allows layers to be arranged around a mandrel. Many pultruded profiles are predominantly reinforced along their length. Do not assume a tube designed for axial stiffness is equally suitable for local clamping or a bolted joint.

A 3K woven face describes the surface reinforcement appearance and tow size, not the complete layup or finished strength. Gloss and matt finishes are also separate from structural performance.

Give the workshop the loading picture.

Describe span, supports, bending direction, torsion, compression and any clamp or fastener locations. Include the target deflection or test requirement if known. A useful conversation begins with what the tube must do, not a universal layer recipe.

Continue specifying your part.

LET’S MAKE IT CLEAR.

What are
you building?

You don’t need a complete specification to start a conversation. Tell us the application and what you know so far.
