Drilling Carbon Fibre: Hole Quality & Drawing Requirements

Specify the hole and its function together. Appearance, dimensions and the load path all matter.

Discuss your requirements ↗

Before machining.

Mark hole diameter, position, datum, edge distance and the mating hardware. For a through-hole in a tube, specify whether both walls must align and how the bolt load is carried. Do not choose a tightening torque from tube size alone.

When the hole edge is damaged.

Review cutter condition, support at the exit face and the machining setup before repeating the operation. Fraying at the surface and separation between layers are different concerns. Inspect both entry and exit and agree how damaged parts will be assessed.

Cosmetic trimming or filling does not establish that structural performance has been restored. If a hole carries load, the acceptance decision needs to match the part and its duty.

Make the drawing useful.

Geometry

State units, hole and slot dimensions, datums and positional requirements.

Assembly

Show inserts, sleeves, washers or other load-spreading features where required by the design.

Acceptance

Specify critical checks and how the finished features will be verified against the drawing.
