Telescopic Carbon Fibre Tubes: Clearance & Tolerances

A receiving tube’s inside diameter and the sliding tube’s outside diameter are the starting point, not the complete fit specification.

Discuss your requirements ↗

Calculate the diametral clearance.

Nominal clearance = receiving ID − sliding OD. With a receiving ID of 20.30 mm and sliding OD of 20.00 mm, the nominal diametral clearance is 0.30 mm.

If each diameter has a ±0.10 mm tolerance, the calculated minimum clearance is 20.20 − 20.10 = 0.10 mm; the maximum is 20.40 − 19.90 = 0.50 mm. These are arithmetic examples, not recommended fits.

Why nominal size is not enough.

Shape & surface

Ovality, straightness, finish and wear affect movement. A positive diameter calculation alone does not guarantee smooth sliding.

Overlap & clamps

The overlap, guides and clamp design influence alignment and local loading. Specify the assembly, not only two tube sizes.

Square sections

Corner radii, twist and flat-to-flat dimensions need separate attention. An internal corner can obstruct a mating external corner.

Extended pole length is a different dimension.

The 6–20 m range on our water-fed pole page describes the custom extended assembly length. It is not the length of a single tube section or a guaranteed working reach. Collapsed length, section count and accessories depend on the agreed design.

Check a fit or discuss an assembly.

LET’S MAKE IT CLEAR.
